Newsletter October 2021

Published over 2 years ago • 4 min read

Hi everyone! My name is Felix and I am a 16 y/o who loves to learn. I am interested in technology, so spoiler alert, most of my newsletters will have something to do with tech :). Every month I will write about what I have learned or enjoyed doing.

So, it's this time of the month again! My monthly newsletter has arrived. This month is a bit longer than last month, as promised :) The topics I'm covering this month are:

  • TKS
    • Blockchain
    • Longevity
    • Mindset
    • Velocity
  • Personal
    • Delayed Gratification
    • Blinkist
    • Cant hurt me - David Goggins

TKS

Blockchain

One of the technical subjects we covered this month was blockchain. If you don't understand what blockchain is, read my article about it here :)

We had to separate in teams and create a hypothetical company that implements blockchain technology to solve a problem in the world. We had about 90 minutes I think, not sure. After that we had to present it for everyone.

Our team created Drop. A company that solves the water crisis in the future! I know right, sounds cool! How does Drop solve it though? Well shortly said, it solves it through educating people about the upcoming water shortage in the world. Checks how much water you have used through the water-bill. And gives rewards if you're under a certain amount per person. With the rewards you could "purchase" water in the future when there's a shortage or when you don't have enough money to pay the water-bill.

Shout out to Ariv who did an awesome job at presenting it! And shout out to the rest of the team: Prisha, Ikhlas and Sreeram who helped with the project!

Longevity

The second technical session will be at the end of the month. It's about longevity. I already did my basic research on it to understand the topic. I'm not in to biology so it wasn't as fun as learning about blockchain.

It was still very interesting though. Basically, it's how to expand our health span, the years when we're free of deceases. Will update you next month on how the session went!

Mindset

The two mindsets that stuck with me were, bias towards action and courage. I am a huge procrastinator as most of you reading this probably are.

So thanks to these mindsets and the mindset of David Goggins, more on that later, I just decided Fuck it! Ima just do it! I've never learned true discipline in my life. The time has come to change that. If I ever want to achieve anything, I need to learn it. The hard way. And changing habits that are detrimental to you in the long run, requires courage. If you want to learn more about habits, and want to change some of them, I really recommend you to read Atomic Habits by James Clear.

Velocity

TKS offers an opt-in Velocity course, which I obviously joined. It helps students to push past their current limits. The goal is to grow 10x by focusing in a specific area and relentlessly pursuing excellence. We're in a group that holds each other accountable. If you do not put in the work, they kick you out. So really pushing myself here xD.

It does require a lot of additional things to do ... All good for me in the long run, good habits. I need that. Even though some of the stuff I need to do every week is fully out of my comfort zone.

Like having a meeting with someone new every week. And no, sadly it can't be someone else from TKS :/. That would've been too easy. I have to have meetings with legit people. Who have achieved something, someone I could learn from. I'll update you next month on this :).

I also started a "focus" on blockchain, since it's a requirement for velocity. That means I will be going deeper in to blockchain, and really learn all the ins and outs of it. I will be creating real applications with blockchain once I'm near the end of the focus :)

Personal

Delayed Gratification

The world has essentially pushed you to be weak and yet the world would treat you better if you were strong.
Hamza Ahmed

This quote stuck with me. I heard it on Youtube. In todays society instant gratification is everywhere, and pushed. All the social media apps you use, are made to harvest your attention by giving you dopamine. They get you addicted. I wasted too much of my time on social media. Doing nothing to improve my situation. Just scrolled and watched memes.

people using phone while standing

My solution? Delete all distractions (TikTok, Instagram). However, I still have YouTube on my phone. I don't scroll YouTube aimlessly. What I do is, search something I want to watch, or wait until the YouTuber I'm subscribed to posts their weekly video. Then watch it, when I have the time. There is a lot to learn on YouTube. Not on Instagram or TikTok. Or at least you can't filter out the good things from the noise.

Blinkist

I had the chance to experience Blinkist. It's a book summary app. I see the use of it on certain books, not every book though. It doesn't do justice on bigger, more complex books. The book I read was, surrounded by idiots by Thomas Erikson. It helps you to better understand other personality types, and how to deal with them. So in that case, the summary was a succes. I wouldn't have had the energy to read the full book.

Can't hurt me - David Goggins

It's time to go to war with yourself.
David Goggins

Can't hurt me is by far the best book ever for creating discipline, not motivation. Motivation is temporary, discipline is forever. I'm listening to the audiobook on Audible. It has more content on there, they do a mini podcast between the chapters and talk about behind the scenes etc. The book tells the life story of David Goggins.

He is the 1%. He earned his way up there. He's the type of person who defies all odds. Because of these kinds of people we say, never say never. He went through it all, and came up on top. Still haven't finished the book. I have only read about 1/3 of it.

David's mindset is basically the get hard mindset. Just do it! His life story is so inspiring that I changed my habits and started working on my discipline. Most people take the path of least resistance. It's logical from a biological standpoint. But not for succes. If you want to achieve something, you have to take the path of most resistance. You have to actually do the hard things. Because most people won't. That's how you get in to the 1%.

This was it for this month! Thank you all for reading this :). If you enjoyed it, please share this with your friends :)

See you next month!
